The Phanto Zone (also spelled as Pakhro Zone) is one of the newer and lesser-explored safari zones of Jim Corbett National Park, located near the Kotdwar region in the southern part of the park. Known for its peaceful environment, rich biodiversity, and scenic beauty, Phanto offers a unique and offbeat safari experience away from the crowds of more popular zones.
The zone is part of the Sonanadi Wildlife Sanctuary, which falls under the Corbett Tiger Reserve buffer area. Despite being less commercialized, Phanto boasts a healthy population of wild elephants, leopards, deer, wild boars, and sloth bears, along with a wide variety of bird species, making it ideal for both wildlife lovers and birdwatchers. Though tiger sightings are rare compared to zones like Dhikala or Bijrani, the raw wilderness and tranquility of Phanto are its biggest attractions.
The terrain is a mix of dense sal forests, river streams, and hilly patches, providing a diverse habitat for flora and fauna. Jeep safaris are conducted in the morning and evening, guided by experienced naturalists. Since the zone is still developing as a tourism hub, it offers a more authentic and less crowded safari experience.
Entry to the Phanto Zone is through the Kotdwar Gate, and safari bookings must be made in advance. Ideal for travelers seeking solitude, birding, and nature photography, a visit to the Phanto Zone offers a refreshing alternative to the mainstream safari routes in Jim Corbett.
